General Information 2024-2025 Season

Stevenson Youth Program

The Stevenson Youth Program (SYP) is designed to foster a lifelong appreciation for the sport of Nordic skiing, a love for the outdoors, and a basic understanding of our amazing winter environment.  In the SYP skiers in 2nd through 5th grade, (ages 7-11) can participate in 10 sessions that include Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday or Wednesday options at the Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center. Multiple sessions are also available. Our sessions are comprised of progressive, age appropriate activities that will develop their XC skiing skills,  improve fitness, develop environmental awareness, and a love for the outdoors with the main objective being learning while having fun.

SYP participants will ski in small groups based on age, focus and ability. They will have opportunities for playing group games, embarking on trail adventures, learning how to take care of their equipment and dressing appropriately for winter weather. There will also be options to join some fun local races.

Enrollment Options:  10 weeks for everyone, plus a 3 day winter camp. Multiple weekly session signups are available.

Flexible Classic and Skating Sessions:  It is critical that these young skiers have successful skiing experiences, and at times the weather in the Cascades can make that a challenge.  To accomplish this, MBSEF will announce the schedule of  classic and skating sessions by email (based on weather reports, grooming, etc.) a few days before each weekend.  There does come a point where skiers need to learn to ski in all conditions, but at this age our number one goal is help the skiers find success and have fun.

Events:  Throughout the year the skiers will participate in special event days that include a family day, paintball biathlon, super hero day, trivia hunts, and some fun mini-races for those who are ready.

Trail Passes:  All participants will be responsible for their own passes. Go to www.mtbachelor.com for early season deals.

Equipment:  Skiers need their own classic and skate equipment (skis, poles, boots).  Equipment can be obtained at the Skyliners Ski Swap in October,  Sunnyside Sports, Mt. Bachelor, Latitude 44 and Webcyclery and The Powderhouse. Young skiers age 7 who are beginners can just use classic gear and 1 set of poles.

New to the program?  Please fill out and return the New Member Questionnaire by October 15.

Nordic Ski Mountaineering

The MBSEF Ski Mountaineering program aims to introduce youth athletes of middle and high school ages interested in ski mountaineering to the sport through a program designed around both competition and fun.  This sport is for the Nordic skier who love the backcountry and enjoys a thrilling descent, for the alpine skier who would like to skip the lift and add some cardio, and for the mountain biker and runner who want to keep their fitness going over the winter with something new and exciting.

The “skimo” program will focus on the skills and tools needed to execute a successful training and racing season along with education in gear, technique, training and racing principles, and more.

A background in Alpine or Nordic skiing is recommended but not necessary. This 6-8 week program will give youth interested in skimo the opportunity to learn from the basics all the way up to their first race experience. This program focuses on ski mountaineering as a competitive sport rather than a touring perspective and will be taught with the intention of racing a skimo race.

MBSEF has rental equipment available first come, first serve since it’s limited. Prior to any equipment purchases, it is best if parents talk with Coach Max King.

Participants will work with the team two days per week and be given a full training program for fitness training on their own if they would like. The program will start with series of classroom sessions to introduce the basics of gear and skimo technique, then lead into on-hill training to emphasize technique and gain fitness.

The program will also include the opportunity to race in a local or regional skimo race (entry fee and travel not included).

Three Week Intro To Skimo

The intro session is intended for athletes with no prior skimo or touring experience.  This session is $145. The first two weeks will get athletes up to speed on pieces of equipment and how to use them. We’ll start with several classroom sessions to become familiar with the gear and how to tour safely. We’ll move to the ski hill to practice what we’ve learned in the classroom and work on the basics of moving uphill and downhill and transitioning in between.

To extend the Intro session to 5 more weeks on snow, the fee is an additional $375.

Six Week Skimo Training

The 6 week Skimo Training program is intended for athletes with some touring experience and will get right into the training aspect of skimo.  This session is $450. We’ll use the first sessions to re-familiarize ourselves with the lighter weight skimo equipment and how it works. We’ll work on transitions and technical skills needed for skimo and then move into specific skimo workouts focused on fitness.

About the Coach

Max King has been coaching youth athletes for the past 15 years in various running programs and camps. He sees skimo as a natural progression for endurance athletes in learning a new sport, cross training for summer activities, and learning a new way to enjoy the winter. With the inclusion of Skimo in the 2026 winter Olympics this seemed like the perfect opportunity to work with youth in a new sport and introduce them to this awesome winter activity.

Max is a professional running athlete for Salomon and competes all over the world. He started skimo 8 years ago as a way to improve his mountain running, cross train, and find a way to enjoy the Central Oregon winter. Since then he has participated in numerous skimo races around the West and can’t wait to share what he’s learned.
