General Information 2025-2026 Season
The Stevenson Youth Program (SYP) is designed to foster a lifelong appreciation for the sport of Nordic skiing, a love for the outdoors, and basic knowledge of Nordic skate and classic technique. Our main objective for young skiers is learning while having fun on skis. In the SYP skiers in 2nd through 5th grade, (ages 7-11) can participate in 10 sessions beginning January 4th and ending March 11.
SYP participants will ski in small groups based on age, focus and ability. Our sessions consist of progressive, age-appropriate activities that will develop their XC skiing skills, improve fitness, develop environmental awareness, learning how to take care of their equipment and dressing appropriately for winter weather.
Enrollment Options: Available sessions include Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday or Wednesday options plus a 2-Day Winter Camp 12/20 & 12/21, all at the Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center. Multiple sessions are also available.
Flexible Classic and Skating Sessions: We alternate weekly between skate and classic technique. Younger beginner skiers have the option of classic skiing only. We will always let you know which technique we are doing for the week ahead of time.
Events: Throughout the year the skiers will participate in special event days that include Paintball Biathlon, Super-Hero Costume day, a Trivia hunt, and more!
Trail Passes: All participants will be responsible for their own passes. Go to www.mtbachelor.com for early season pricing. Purchasing a Youth season pass is cheaper than buying a daily trail pass every time you come.
Equipment: Skiers need their own classic and skate equipment (skis, poles, boots). Options for equipment can include a season package rental or purchasing new or used equipment. Our sponsor shops include Latitude 44, Webskiis, and Mt. Bachelor Nordic. For used gear come to the MBSEF Skyliners Ski Swap October 11, 2025. Young beginner skiers age 7 can use classic gear. Should they want to try out skating when they feel comfortable we can loan skis or you can rent from a shop.
New to the program? Please fill out and return the New Member Questionnaire after registering.

Adventure Development: This program is intended to bridge the gap between our developing younger skiers, and our competition focused older ones. The big distinction being that, while this group is still focused on growing in our sport, it is not purely competition driven. Having fun on skis, building new skills through new challenges, while also doing our work to improve fitness and technique are the main goals of Adventure Development. All are welcome, from older U12 skiers, who have never raced and might be looking to experience Nordic competition for the first time, to U16 skiers who want to continue developing their skiing outside of the competitive sphere. Exploration of our sport, with the experiences, athletic development, and joy that it brings are the name of the game here!
The PRO team 2 and 4 day offerings include the costs of coaching fees and OISRAN PROvisional registration. Race travel is not included in program fees. The “PRO” team is for skiers who race the OISRAN high school races as “pro-visional” athletes and have expressed a desire to pursue more competitive experiences.
Limited van transportation available for athletes on a first come/first serve basis. Athletes riding van capped at 20/day.
Training days offered: Wed/Thu/Sat/Sun. Note: Thursday session is geared to experienced skiers only. Some training will be after dark with headlamps.

Parent Handbook 25/26 Nordic Competition Development Team
Age – 14-21
Competition Development: This group is made up of our older, more developed skiers. These skiers will be pursuing a more focused set of goals throughout the year, though not without its fair share of fun along the way. The Competition Development skiers are pursuing training and performance development, and may even be planning to pursue skiing beyond their time at MBSEF. Though this group is geared towards athletes ages 14 to 21, it is not limited to just those U16+ athletes. We do ask that you speak with your coaches, before signing up as a U14.
Key takeaways from Competition Development:
• Goal oriented and competition focused programing
• 4 and 6 days per week options. With either seasonal or year round offerings
• Twice weekly, before school, strength programing
• Regional and national travel (PNW Cup, Junior Nationals, Junior National Qualifier events, and other NRL opportunities)

The MBSEF Ski Mountaineering program aims to introduce youth athletes of middle and high school ages interested in ski mountaineering to the sport through a program designed around both competition and fun. This sport is for the Nordic skier who love the backcountry and enjoys a thrilling descent, for the alpine skier who would like to skip the lift and add some cardio, and for the mountain biker and runner who want to keep their fitness going over the winter with something new and exciting.
The “skimo” program will focus on the skills and tools needed to execute a successful training and racing season along with education in gear, technique, training and racing principles, and more.
A background in Alpine or Nordic skiing is recommended but not necessary. This 6-8 week program will give youth interested in skimo the opportunity to learn from the basics all the way up to their first race experience. This program focuses on ski mountaineering as a competitive sport rather than a touring perspective and will be taught with the intention of racing a skimo race.
MBSEF has rental equipment available first come, first serve since it’s limited. Prior to any equipment purchases, it is best if parents talk with Coach Max King.
Participants will work with the team two days per week and be given a full training program for fitness training on their own if they would like. The program will start with series of classroom sessions to introduce the basics of gear and skimo technique, then lead into on-hill training to emphasize technique and gain fitness.
The program will also include the opportunity to race in a local or regional skimo race (entry fee and travel not included).
Three Week Intro To Skimo
The intro session is intended for athletes with no prior skimo or touring experience. This session is $145. The first two weeks will get athletes up to speed on pieces of equipment and how to use them. We’ll start with several classroom sessions to become familiar with the gear and how to tour safely. We’ll move to the ski hill to practice what we’ve learned in the classroom and work on the basics of moving uphill and downhill and transitioning in between.
To extend the Intro session to 5 more weeks on snow, the fee is an additional $375.
Six Week Skimo Training
The 6 week Skimo Training program is intended for athletes with some touring experience and will get right into the training aspect of skimo. This session is $450. We’ll use the first sessions to re-familiarize ourselves with the lighter weight skimo equipment and how it works. We’ll work on transitions and technical skills needed for skimo and then move into specific skimo workouts focused on fitness.
About the Coach
Max King has been coaching youth athletes for the past 15 years in various running programs and camps. He sees skimo as a natural progression for endurance athletes in learning a new sport, cross training for summer activities, and learning a new way to enjoy the winter. With the inclusion of Skimo in the 2026 winter Olympics this seemed like the perfect opportunity to work with youth in a new sport and introduce them to this awesome winter activity.
Max is a professional running athlete for Salomon and competes all over the world. He started skimo 8 years ago as a way to improve his mountain running, cross train, and find a way to enjoy the Central Oregon winter. Since then he has participated in numerous skimo races around the West and can’t wait to share what he’s learned.
