MBSEF Academic Support Program

The MBSEF Academic Support Program was created to meet the unique needs of our student-athletes as they navigate the challenges of balancing rigorous athletic training with academic success. Recognizing that our athletes are enrolled in a range of educational settings—including traditional schools, fully online programs, and hybrid models—we designed this program to offer flexible and meaningful academic support tailored to their diverse learning environments.

At the core of the program are regularly scheduled study hall sessions, providing a quiet, focused space where students can complete coursework, collaborate with peers, and receive guidance from our Lead Academic Advisor. These sessions are structured to accommodate varying training and travel schedules, ensuring that students always have access to academic resources.

Beyond study halls, the program connects students with qualified tutors, offers academic planning and support while athletes are traveling for competitions, and organizes educational workshops for parents to help them better understand and support their child’s academic journey.

We are incredibly proud of the positive impact this program has had on our student-athletes and their families. As we look ahead, we’re excited to continue expanding and evolving the MBSEF Academic Support Program to meet the growing needs of our community. This is a resource that is available to all of our MBSEF student-athletes.

The majority of our student-athletes attend schools within the Bend-La Pine School District. This district offers a comprehensive selection of online courses for students in grades K–12, providing a flexible academic option that supports the demanding training schedules of competitive athletes. In addition, Bend-La Pine’s online summer courses present an excellent opportunity for student-athletes to get ahead academically and reduce their course load during the busy winter competition season.

The image above features a group of MBSEF student-athletes participating in a study hall session at our Bill Healy Training Facility. These study halls are offered throughout the week and provide a quiet, structured environment where students can focus on their coursework, collaborate with peers, receive academic support, and connect with tutors as needed.

In the fall of 2024, MBSEF welcomed Scott Rowles to speak with our parent community about the critical role of organization and support in student-athlete success. With nearly a decade of experience working with adolescents and teens as a life and academic coach, college instructor, K–12 teacher, and mentor, Scott brought both depth and practical insight to the conversation.

A licensed Oregon teacher, Associate Educational Therapist, and Certified Behavioral Coach, Scott believes that every student has the potential to achieve their goals with the right tools and guidance. His presentation focused on actionable strategies for supporting students in managing their time, navigating student-teacher relationships appropriately, and accessing helpful academic and community resources. He also provided a developmental overview of organizational expectations from ages 12 to 18, offering parents a clear roadmap to help their students thrive both academically and athletically.
